A member of the Crusaders squad in five of the team’s first six seasons, Matt Sexton went on to play successfully in Europe with leading Irish province Ulster. Sexton debuted for Canterbury in 1991 and had run up 128 appearances by the time he headed offshore 10 years later. A highly respected coach and Qualified Physical Education teacher Matt headed up the Canterbury and Crusaders player Academy programmes and coached the Crusaders Development Team from 2008-2012. In 2012 Matt’s coaching career took him to South Africa where he was Head Coach of the Kings Super Rugby Franchise and Eastern Province Kings Currie Cup teams.

Brent Frew is well known around Canterbury for his ability to break down and teach core rugby skills in a simple yet effective manner. Brent coached at all levels through his role as Canterbury Rugby Development Manager for many years and was in hot demand across the region. Brent played a key role in the Crusaders coaching environment as Skills Coach from 2008-12. Since moving on from the Crusaders he has filled a senior role with the Canterbury Rugby Football Union's International High Performance Unit which now see’s him based in Brazil coaching the Brazilian Rugby Unions national XV's and 7's teams.

A former captain Rob Penney played 101 games for Canterbury between 1985 and 1994 as number 8 and was widely thought to be unlucky not to have played for the All Blacks. As Canterbury Head Coach from 2006 to 2011 he led the team to success for an unprecedented four consecutive championships in the world toughest provincial competition. Rob took up the new challenge of coaching in Europe when appointed Head Coach of Munster in 2012.
Current Crusaders Halfback Coach and High Performance Video Analyst
After a successful playing career as halfback for the Leicester Tigers Jamie took up a position with Canterbury and Crusaders rugby in 2008. The role includes specialist halfback coaching where he can often be seen at Crusaders training taking All Black Andy Ellis and the squad through position specific skill development. Jamie’s role as the Crusaders High Performance Video Analyst sees him at the cutting edge of both performance technology and player analyses.
Current Crusaders Assistant Coach 2010-2013, Former All Black and Crusaders Prop
Hugely respected up and coming forward specialist Hewett played 22 Tests for New Zealand and 71 Super Rugby games at prop for the Crusaders. A product of the winning Crusaders environment Dave’s technical scrum ability and communicate style has seen him rise rapidly through the ranks. He took up a role as Crusaders Assistant Coach in 2010 and remains in the role currently.
Former All Black, Crusaders Assistant Coach and current NSW Waratahs Assistant Coach
Daryl Gibson joined the Crusaders in a coaching capacity after a long stint playing and coaching in the United Kingdom with the Glasgow Warriors, Leicester Tigers and Bristol Shoguns. After 4 years coaching with the Crusaders (2008-2012) Darryl took up a new coaching challenge with the NSW Waratahs in 2013. His playing career included 19 Tests for the All Blacks, 78 games for the Crusaders winning three Super titles in 1998, 1999 and 2002.

A tough as nails hooker, Mark ended his playing career with four Super Rugby championships for the Crusaders which included 81 appearances and 29 tests for the All Blacks. The first former Crusaders player to take up an official role on the Crusaders coaching staff Mark was assistant coach from 2006-11. In 2011 he was successfully appointed head coach of the Hurricanes and is widely respected for his technical coaching skills.

Angus Gardiner enjoyed an outstanding career filled with success, which included featuring in two Super rugby championships with the Crusaders. A highly respected flanker and expert at the breakdown Angus held numerous coaching roles within Canterbury and Crusaders rugby before taking up a coaching role with French team Montpellier in 2010-2011. Angus is now back with the Crusaders in a management and staff coaching role.
Former Otago and Highlanders assistant coach, Former Championship winning Canterbury Assistant Coach, Current Canterbury Rugby International High Performance Unit Manager
The former long-serving Otago first-five-eighths (119 appearances) games got formally involved within the New Zealand age-group system from 1994, assisting with both the national Under-19s and Under-21s. He joined the Canterbury coaching staff in 2006 and coached Canterbury to Air New Zealand Cup success in 2008 along with Rob Penney. 2009 -2011 saw John fill a leading role in building R80 Rugby’s online coaching website, his current role of senior manager of the very successful Canterbury Rugby Football Union's International High Performance Unit see’s him influence the game all over the world.
